I might look at building one of these next, but out of interest I wondered what other similar kits are out there for building reproductions of retro computers. I noticed it’s hamiş uncommon for some of these to only be produced in limited quantities and it’s unclear whether they will be available again, but here’s a list of things I’ve found:

ROM hacks and mods provide graphics/audio overhauls and total gameplay rebalances for new experiences.

The name says it all! This was Apple’s first family of computers. Steve Wozniak built the first Apple-I himself and began to sell them in 1976 for $666.66, a price Wozniak reportedly chose because he liked repeating numbers. Around 200 Apple-I machines were built in total. The Apple-I, which continued to be produced and sold until August of 1977, didn’t require separate hardware to operate it, a unique feature for the time.

It's worth noting that many older machines might have faulty capacitors. These circuit-level components are used to ensure a consistent supply of power to the rest of the circuit board. Like anything else, they're also prone to failure from use and old age.

You’d think space would be the one place where computer users would be spared the travails of printing, but birli [Ken Shirriff] outlines, there were printers aboard the Space Shuttle, and the story behind them is fascinating.

Proper storage – ROM files require careful organization and storage accountability be preserved for the long term.

A vintage BBC vintage computing computer that was rescued from a Derbyshire tip has gone on show at a museum in Sheffield.

a) will be tripped up by anything that doesn’t run at 4.77Mhz, some Turbo XTs had this fallback in their Turbo mode, carried over to some 286es, but 386 and up mostly seemed to have AT compatibility fallbacks. However, this mode isn’t processor inherent and it’s possible to get into your BIOS and force bus timing low enough to get things to work (May also require downclocking of the system clock, hamiş easy if it’s a crystal, and math, ummm what’s 33 divided by 7) b) falls over on pretty much anything that isn’t an 8088 or direct clone (i.e. Harris, AMD etc 8088). V20s or V30s running at a precise 4.77, nope, sorry, they took a couple of cycles out of some instruction times.

Matthew Bostock spotted the computer at his local recycling centre and alerted the staff to retrieve it

The obvious choice is to make a (punched) paper tape reader, but how does one go about this, and what options exist here? With a few historical examples kakım reference and the tape reader on the impressive 1950s Bendix G-15 which [David] happens to have lounging around, [David] takes us in a new video through the spiraling complexity of what at first glance seems like a simple engineering challenge.

Once your hardware is set, you need to install the MiSTer software. There are a few ways to do this, and you’ll want to dig around forums and GitHub for a while so you know what you’re doing, but the method I went with was simple in the end — essentially, you format your microSD card with an installer package, put it into the DE10-Nano, plug in an Ethernet cable and a USB keyboard, power on the system, and it’ll download all of the available cores.

Software for older systems was not copyrighted, and was open source, so there is a wide variety of available software to run on these simulators.

What about software? Fortunately, it's possible to find older operating systems and applications on various abandonware sites. Macintosh Garden is an excellent resource for anyone restoring older Apple computers.
